“Chipwrecked” turns out to have been an accurate title in more ways than one for the third instal in this diminutive talking-critter franchise, which has hit its big-screen ceiling. A $23.5 million opening weekend made the third film not even half as lucrative as “The Squeakquel’s” $48.9 million debut. With tons of top-notch family fare being offered up this Holiday season, from “Hugo” to “The Muppets,” the relatively low-brow stylings of “Chipmunks” is a hard sell. The trailers packed broad comedy and cheesy, pop-referencing one-liners. The posters used lots of unavoidably loud color, but little creativity, while the website was user-unfriendly and lacking in both content and compelling design.
