The first trailer for “MIB III” reveals some farcical new twists to the franchise. The third instal is set mostly in the year 1969, when Agent K is played by Josh Brolin doing his best Tommy Lee Jones, though we only see a moment of it at the end. Furthermore, the guns are bigger, aliens can disguise themselves as graffiti, and leaping from the Chrysler building will take you back in time. Sounds potentially funny on paper, but not so in this trailer. Will Smith’s shtick seems to have gone stale since he was a flippant newbie, fresh from the NYPD. And there aren’t any good action set pieces. This certainly doesn’t hold a candle, or a mind-zapper, to the original film’s trailer.
We’re also introduced to Emma Thompson as Agent Oh, but have yet to meet Alice Eve as a young Oh, nor other supporting cast, including Bill Hader, Jemaine Clement, Rip Torn and Michael Stuhlbarg. We’ll see how the third “MIB” fares when Columbia drops it in theaters next May 25th.
