When high-school student Norman (Dan Byrd) shares his debby-downer perspective on life during English class, the teacher (Adam Goldberg) tells him he “should’ve been born in France.” I’d say the same about this dark (for American audiences) trailer for the buzzed-about indie, “Norman,” and I mean that in the best way possible. It indicates a bold coming-of-age story that delves into the troubled mind of Norman, a sometimes-masochist, for whom first love comes at “the worst possible time,” — just when his father is hit with a terminal illness. Scored by moving original music from Andre Byrd, the edits build to a hopeful climax, as Goldberg tells his student, Norman, “you have an opportunity to change the lives of everyone you know.” From the looks of this trailer, that includes the people who see this movie.
