The Aliens are Electric, the Trailer Is Not
The invisible invaders in “The Darkest Hour” may be electric, but this trailer is not. It opens with a cool digitized score that accentuates the film’s voltaic tone, but is too quickly abandoned for derivative techno-opera. The aliens’ mysterious power to zap people into swirling clouds of ash makes for a few bits of inventive CGI. Otherwise the set pieces are secondhand, including the usual, tired assortment of crumbling buildings, slo-mo firing hand guns, and “Predator“-esque alien POV shots.
Also notable, the blatant product placement for Starbucks and McDonalds in Moscow is disgusting.
