Trailer Throwback: “Watchmen”
Superhero Neo-Noir and “The Smashing Pumpkins”
“Watchmen” was one of the most highly anticipated comic book flicks ever. Much of the fervor was to do with the renown graphic novel from which Zack Snyder’s film was adapted, but much is also thanks to this awesome trailer, a TFI Perfect 10. From Billy Crudup’s stunning transformation into Dr. Manhattan, to the final pan out on an otherworldly mechanical sphere, the trailer packs sexy, bizaare and altogether mind blowing imagery with a sick score to punch it up.
What’s most memorable about the trailer is the way the neo-noir tone synchs with “The Smashing Pumpkins’” industrial sound. At every turn their song, “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning,” which can be found on one of their B-sides albums, provides the perfect grinding, industrial feel. It’s down beats are punctuated by the trailer’s most memorable shots: a ship emerging from the New York Harbor; a man thrown out of a glass skyscraper; a voltaic Dr. Manhattan levitating. And in the end Rorschach utters the only line of dialogue in the trailer with enough gravel to bury a man, and it sticks with you well after the final, Watchmen-yellow title card.

Yup. It’s a good one.
Learn form this people. Seriously learn a thing or 2.
Dope.
This is my favorite trailer of all time.
